Director's Bio
Jeffrey Gee Chin grew up in Marin County and attended Redwood High School where he began his personal film endeavors. He enjoyed sharing with his fellow Asian American the importance of acknowledging their own cultural identities. With his own motivation, he spearheaded fund-raisers, lead cultural festivals, took on leadership roles becoming socially & politically active within the Asian American communities. On the side he created digital films with a purpose to share the historically and culturally unique experiences that occur in human lives.
Five summers ago, Jeffrey traveled to Southern China with the Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco’s In Search of Roots Program. Eleven Chinese-Americans were chosen to visit their ancestral villages in Guangdong Province. Jeffrey took on the extra role of documenting the whole trip, in hopes of creating a documentary. Excerpts of his film were screened on Good Morning America.
Jeffrey is an Honors Graduate of University of California, Berkeley's Film Studies. He continues to produce his own films specializing in documentaries and fictional narratives. He has also been a historical liaison for such venues as an early shrimp fishing Village (China Camp State Park), San Francisco Maritime Museum, and the Chinese American Museum of Los Angeles.
One of his major passion projects revolves around the history of Dark Ages of Chinatown. He completed his Honor Thesis, a research project exploring the history of the 1920's-30's Chinatowns, specifically New York and San Francisco. He plans on completing a documentary that shares the history of an under-recognized Woman Warrior of NYC Chinatown.
Currently, Jeffrey produces short documentaries to promote Angel Island Immigration Station, the Ellis Island of the West, and is a media production technician with SFGOVTV, the C-SPAN of San Francisco. He recently completed principal photography for his first narrative short "Lil Tokyo Reporter".
Jeffrey plans to produce a feature film within the near future, exposing the histories of American people of Asian descent.
